One Meta Tag You Should Use Carefully

December 3rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in SEO

There is only one meta tag that most search engines use – the description tag. It is not ordinarily used for SEO ranking purposes, but it is commonly used (including by Google) as the text on the search results listing.

Google more often than not uses the description meta tag as the text to exhibit when it exhibits your website in the search results. We find that it will use this nearly 70-80% of the time. The rest of the time it will select random text from your home page but commonly it picks up the first 156 characters of text on the page if it does not use the description tag. Make sure your description tags are always 156 characters or less.

To check the length of a piece of text just paste it into a word document and then select the text and then double click the word count box at the bottom of the screen on the status bar.

All meta tags should be at the start of the page inside the head tags.

Google is a little rogue when it comes to using or not using the meta description tag. When it does use it you can have full control of what is displayed to prospective visitors but it will often vary what it uses at will with sometimes it just plucking a piece of text from your page.

To make sure you have more control over what Google picks out as the text in the search results as well as setting the description tag carefully also make sure that the first 156 characters of text on your page says what you would like to see in Google.

If you have a flash site or just use pictures with a little text, you have a problem! We have seen Google pick up the alt text from an image and display this when it didn’t choose to use our description tag. This will tell you to ALWAYS have some text on your page even if it is only 156 carefully selected characters (including spaces).

SEO Tips – Setting Up WordPress Blogs

December 3rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in SEO

WordPress is one of the top Search Engine Optimization enhanced blogs that you can choose to use. It is a world leader. It is uncomplicated and easy to use, looks good and above all is 90% Search Engine Optimization ready out of the package.

This is part of a series of tip articles just about using WordPress for leveraging on SEO.

Tip: Make sure the blog is on YOUR site

We are often asked

If you are doing blogging for SEO purposes compared to gaining traffic purposes, then you can ONLY locate your blog in one place and one place only – On your site!

Do not even think about using a sub-web such as http://www.blog.myhotsite.com. Why would you use a sub web anyhow unless if you want a cool blog URL.

Sub webs are part of your internet site but they are confusing from an SEO position. If you want to have the blog content 100% linked with your website then make sure it is off a sub folder and NOT a sub web for example : http://www.myhappysite.com/blog.

Sub webs will not gain you the identical Search Engine Optimization ranking benefits across all search engines because many search engines treat sub webs as a separate website.

If your blog is presently hosted on blogger.com or wordpress.com then you should consider to move it as soon as manageable if you want to raise your SEO position.

If you have some existing rankings for keywords on Google and Yahoo then you do need to be warned – adding a lot of new content may affect your ranking negativily at first.

We have had clients who had good ranking have their ranking drop through the floor when we added a large blog. Adding a blast of new content ‘dilutes’ your current site content if the new content is NOT Search Engine Optimisation optimized for the keywords that you want to rank for. SEO Optimize the content before making it live to avoid this dilution effect. Taking the time to do this BEFORE you add it to your site will make a big difference to your existing ranking position.

One Seo Tip

December 3rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in SEO

There are two types of SEO, onsite and offsite. Onsite involves optimizing your website to make it search engine friendly. By changing your local site and adding special SEO components you can attract better results, and sometimes great results from search engines like Google.

You can get excellent results with just onsite optimisation on its own but the effects tend to be unstable and not effective continuing. To get top results you will need to do a lot off offsite optimisation as well.

Top onsite SEO tip: change the page title

Believe it or not the changing the page title is one of the most important onsite optimization techniques you can do. The page title is what appears at the top of a browser on the left hand side. Visitors to your site will not commonly take much notice of your page title because it is not shown on your page. However, search engines take a lot of notice of the page title.

If you do not know what the page title looks like in the HTML just open up any page in browser and look at the page source (right click the page and select view source).

You will find the page title within the <title?</title? tags usually within the first few lines of the HTML code. This is an example of an HTML title tag : <title? This is my page title</title?.

Search engines take a lot of notice of the page title because it is like the title of a book, it tells you what the book is about. If the title is clear and concise it tells search engines exactly what the page is about then you can rank high for some of your preferred keywords.

The trick is to make the page title 100% of your keyword or as close to that as manageable. The more extra words, other than your keyword(s), that you have, will reduce the strength. Focus is everything in the world of SEO.

For example, avoid doing this: <title?Earth Worms in the Middle East</title? when your keyword is earth worms. Alternatively simply use: <title?Earth Worms</title?.

If you have multiple keywords only use 2 or 3 maximum or again the focus is reduced. If you are using multiple keywords then do it like this: <title?Earth worms | Middle East</title? – never use filler words like ‘in’ and ‘the’.

Rank No1 – Three Tips To Help You

December 3rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in SEO

Sometimes it’s just the smallest of things that can make a Large difference with SEO ranking results.

Here are 3 small things that will make a Larger difference if you apply them all the time.

1. If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

2. Title is everything.

3. Being bold makes you stand out.

If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.

If you were going fishing as a fishing pro, you would do 1 thing first before throwing your nets into the water, you would KNOW that there were fish there to be caught! A pro fisher ‘man’ doesn’t throw their nets into the water before scanning the water with radar to check to see if there are fish there. If you are smart at SEO you will do the same! You will also not go fishing where everyone else is ‘fishing’, this is common sense.

When it comes to a more abstract world like SEO occasionally we forget every-day sense. So let’s remember!

In the SEO world making sure there are fish is making sure that there is traffic for a word we are preferring to rank for. Use tools like Google Traffic Estimator (just Google it) if you are short on funds, and if you have a little bit of money, go get yourself a WordTracker account (they also have a free tool as well which is great). These (and many other traffic tools) will tell you that there are ‘fish’ for the keywords that you want to rank for.

The next part of the tip is not to fish were everyone else is fishing! This makes logical sense but often forget that it’s best to fish were there is little or no competition! So look for keywords that not may people have content written for but a lot of people are looking for.

Title is everything.

In the SEO world the page title is the ’secret weapon’ of the top ranker! Here is one thing to remember, make sure that the page title is as close as possible to being 100% the keyword you want to rank for as possible. The page title is like the title of a book. If you wanted to learn about the sex life of a worm then a book title of ‘Sex life of a worm’ will grab your attention and you will know you have the book you want. On the other hand a title of ‘Worms and interesting facts’ will not grab you in the same way. Make your title tags (where ever you can) 100% the keyword/key phrase you want to rank for.

Being bold makes you stand out.

This is a very good onsite optimisation tip if you want to optimize a page/blog entry for a particular keyword, make sure you embolden the keyword in the text 2 or 3 times. Do not try to over do it of course! More is not usally better in the SEO world.

SEO Training – Tips On Selecting The Best Trainer

December 2nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in SEO

SEO is a very specialized discipline of net marketing. It is a combination of so many skill areas. An effective SEO company will have a extended range of SEO skills within its team so that it can tackle the many issues that they will face in ranking a site on Google and other search engines.

However, training is very different. Someone that is good at generating results may not be good at communicating to others how they can get results.

Many SEO trainers are hands on SEO optimizers and they do not have a professional IT training background.

Here are five angles to take note of when choosing a great SEO training business.

ONE:

Ask the SEO company if their trainers are SEO pros as well as fully fledged IT trainers. Do they have the ability, know-how and skill to deal with individuals in a classroom situation so that the trainees can fully benefit from their SEO skills?

TWO:

Does the SEO trainer have practical hands-on experience of ranking numerous unique types of websites on Google, Yahoo and MSN – can they show you the results! Or is the trainer a book teacher – they learnt from a book all the theories but have not learnt the hard cold facts about SEO in the SEO ‘jungle’. Will they be able to lend to the table the help skills to solve YOUR issues on YOUR website? It’s a simple matter of asking.

THREE:

What technical background does your SEO trainer have? Have they an extensive web development background so that they can deal all the core areas that they need to help you rank and learn about ranking your website. A top flight SEO expert teacher should have 2+ years’ web development skills in both HTML and programming languages combines as a minimum.

FOUR:

Does the training come with any followup support? Like all training – on the day everything is easy – yet after the course when you get back the story is different! What after training support is offered by the SEO training company in writing so that you know you will be able to integrate your training effectively.

FIVE:

What is the company’s current ranking on Google? Have you checked what their current ranking is for keywords like SEO, SEO training, SEO services etc? If they are not on the first page or the top of the second page in the local Google site then maybe they are doing training too early before they have established themselves properly. So go check their rankings right away or just ask them!
